“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life.

And that is why I succeed.”

– Michael Jordan

Having Faith over Failure is one of the most critical parts of the success formula. Putting it more simply, getting past your shortcomings with faith and knowing that learning from each and every failure will lead to more success.

But the truth is – Success can be tough. The road to achievement is rocky and filled with obstacles. It’s important to have a set of principles that will build you up and keep you focused on the prize.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve set goals a time or two. You’ve reached a milestone or two. And you’ve fallen short. Maybe even many times. I am going to share a shocking thought….

Failure is the secret ingredient to success.

No one likes to fail, but it’s an important part of learning. Failure teaches us how to do things differently and better. Failure doesn’t mean you aren’t good at what you want to do, it means you need to find a different approach to do it well.

Let’s walk through getting past failure with faith.

Step 1. Embrace failure.

“Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.”

It’s one of the most critical steps. Don’t be afraid to and then fail.  A mentor of mine says the first try is to prepare for the second time.  In order to succeed, embracing failure is the first and most important step.

Step  2. Take action towards what you want with or without the ability to do it perfectly.

“Jeremiah, say this to the people of Judah: This is what the Lord says: You know if a man falls down, he gets up again. And if a man goes the wrong way, he turns around and comes back.” – Jer 8:4

When you exhibit faith through your failure you’ll be present, not perfect. Being present, identifying your lessons learned and staying in motion will carry you on your journey towards success and all the lessons along the way will strengthen you.

Step 3. Create a plan and then fail forward towards that plan.

“The good thing about failing is that you learn from it. Learn from mistakes so you don’t keep repeating them.”

Being successful  and enduring your families and falling forward, being adaptable, agile and accepting setbacks as temporary is just a part of the path towards success.

Step 4. Treat each experience as a blessing.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13

No matter how much pain or disappointment is going on, if you can look back on a time in your life and say “I did my best” despite the outcome, you are truly blessed beyond measure and will become more and more successful in life than most people could ever imagine.

Step 5. Understand that anything that is worth having will require sacrifice.

“Forget about the past and press on towards the eternal prize.”

When I entered seminary, I remember our professor saying, the only way you’ll make it to the degree is by sacrifice. What he meant was yo’;ll need to give up some things, say no to other things and even miss out on some important things to make this work. It was true. But one the other side after receiving my degree, I did gain the degree and knowledge and the sacrifice was worth it in the end.

Step 6. The most successful people fail a lot and they fail fast! They learn from their mistakes and keep moving forward.

“God will help us when we do fail. But remember if we do fail He has a good reason for allowing it to happen. We might not understand it at that moment, but God will prove to be faithful in the end.”

Don’t look back.

Start with the end in mind, but know that the end might be delayed or changed.

Look for an opportunity to rise from your failure and do better this time.

Ask for help when needed.

Continue moving forward even if you are unsure of the best path.

I’ve failed many times, in many ways.

If you are going to succeed in anything, you need to fail first. And if you don’t experience failure you won’t be a successful business owner, employee, artist or really anything because your success is based on your failures.

You learn from failure. It’s what you do next that matters. So embrace it and learn from it and then do something great with it.
